Mylo Schaaf, MD, MPH, DTMH is a Professor of Medicine, Senior International Officer and Director of Global Outreach in the Office of the Executive Vice-Chancellor and Provost, as well as Global Health Advisor, School of Medicine, University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). Mylo worked in journalism and book editing before entering medical school. After training in Primary Care Internal Medicine, her career has focused on medically underserved populations: at the San Francisco General Emergency Room and TB Clinic, in substance abuse and chronic pain management at Kaiser-Permanente Medical Group, at Marin Community Clinic serving indigent patients, and in global locations (education, training, and health care delivery in a number of countries in Asia, Africa, and Latin America). Since her return to UCSF in 2011, she has focused on international affiliations and creating a standard UCSF approach to trainees doing academic work abroad. Dr. Schaaf has mentored numerous medical students and residents, and has been recruited to lead or participate in a number of UC, UCSF, or departmental committees and boards, to which she contributes on global health issues and international affiliations/research. Her creative work and authorship involves resource-limited populations, trainees working abroad, and the inequity of global medical exchanges.

Mylo Schaaf is also a writer and her book, "Blown into Now - Poems for a Journey," has been published by Blue Light Press in 2022. After the death of her 24-year-old son, Alex, these poems describe her path from hopelessness toward joy, describing actions and practices that she wants to share with those who mourn. Alex Lowenstein’s photos of wild and beauty accompany each poem.
