UCSF Fresno Medical Education & Research Program

Established in 1975, UCSF Fresno Medical Education Program is a regional campus of University of California, San Francisco.

UCSF FresnoThe program was created with support from the California Legislature and the Veterans Administration to address the severe shortage of physicians practicing in California’s San Joaquin Valley and to increase access to continuing medical education in the region.

The program has a state-of-the-art facility for residents and students to provide care and learn their profession. Residents have the opportunity to evaluate and care for community patients in a referral hospital with University faculty. In addition, they continue to learn and work in the highly managed VA medical system. The UCSF Fresno Department of Medicine faculty provide training to 64 residents each year. In addition to the residency training program, we also have well-established fellowships in Cardiology, Pulmonary Critical Care Medicine, Gastroenterology, Infectious Diseases, Interventional Cardiology, and Sleep Medicine. We plan to develop a fellowship for Hematology/Oncology in the near future. Please visit the Fresno website for additional information.

Coupled with the expansion of training opportunities on our campus, we have also expanded opportunities in research with the recent opening of the UCSF Fresno Clinical Research Center. The 3300 sq ft, state-of-the-art facility provides infrastructure support for patient and population-focused research. The department has a robust clinical trials and clinical research program including several multi-centered NIH-funded trials. The faculty, fellows and residents publish 40-50 papers each year and all fellows and many residents present abstracts at national meetings each year.

Overview of Activities

At UCSF Fresno we offer both a preliminary year of training in internal medicine and a complete three-year program in internal medicine leading to board certification. Our mission is to produce well-rounded clinicians prepared for either the practice of general internal medicine or further training in subspecialties. Our program is designed to provide residents with progressive patient responsibility consistent with their level of training. We pride ourselves on our ability to provide residents with a great deal of hands-on experience in patient care while at the same time encouraging the use of evidence-based medicine principles and resources. We are very proud of our program and work continuously to assure that it is providing the highest quality medical care and medical training experience.

Directions & Contacts

Our program is located in Fresno, California, the largest city in the Central Valley of California. Our referral area stretches throughout the Central Valley to the Central Coast and includes at least 1.2 million people. Fresno County is one of the most ethnically diverse areas in the United States with over 100 languages spoken, and residents consequently gain valuable experience in serving this diverse population. Fresno is centrally located in California only an hour from three of the oldest national parks in the United States, Yosemite, Kings Canyon and Sequoia. Snow skiing is available in the nearby Sierras and the beautiful Central California Coast is only two hours away.
