Application Process for Graduates of US and Canadian Medical Schools

Thank you for your interest in the Internal Medicine Residency Training Program at the University of California, San Francisco.

ERAS Supplemental Application

UCSF Internal Medicine Residency believes the decision to choose a program should lie in the hands of the applicant. Aligned with our principles of equity and inclusivity, and to decrease applicant stress, we will not be participating in this year's ERAS supplemental application process. As part of our Holistic Review process, we do not consider applicant location or expressed desire to train at our program as part of their evaluation, decision to offer an interview, or decision to rank an applicant. We encourage applicants who are excited about our program to apply!

1. ALL APPLICATION MATERIALS MUST BE SUBMITTED VIA ERAS (Electronic Residency Application Service)

PLEASE NOTE: The basic components of your application (the common application form, transcript and Dean's Letter) MUST BE RECEIVED by us by October 15.

2. LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION

ERAS allows four letters of recommendation to be sent to our program in addition to the required Medical Student Performance Evaluation Letter (MSPE or Dean's Letter). One letter should be from the chairman of the Department of Medicine or his/her designee. At least one of the remaining letters should be from Department of Medicine faculty. Additional letters of recommendation should be from faculty members who have worked with you in a clinical setting, who know you well from research or other scholarly projects, from community involvement experiences, etc. We encourage you to submit letters of recommendation that give our selection committee the broadest possible view of your qualifications and attributes, from as many different perspectives as is possible.

We require three letters of recommendation in addition to the Dean's letter; you may submit an optional fourth letter of recommendation without penalty.

3. USMLE SCORES

There are no minimum USMLE score requirements for application to the residency program.  Candidates must have passed USMLE Step 1 and Step 2-CK on their first attempt.  UCSF requires applicants to have passed Step 2-CK by February 15 in order to be ranked by our program.

4. PHOTOGRAPHS

Photographs are NOT required to complete your ERAS application. However, since considerable evaluation of your entire application packet occurs for many weeks after your visit and interview on "Applicant Day", a photograph greatly assists us in specifically recalling the details of your visit here. If you choose to submit a photograph, you can do so at any point in the application process timeline, since you will submit the (scanned) photograph to ERAS, and it will then be forwarded to us.

5. INTERVIEW SCHEDULING AND "APPLICANT DAY"

Interviews will be scheduled only after our selection committee reviews applications.  Complete applications are due October 15.  We will send interview invitation by email, so be sure to indicate your preferred and accurate email address on your ERAS application.  The Department of Medicine will conduct a one day interview from approximately 7:00AM to 1:00PM.  The “Applicant Day” program provides an overview of the residency program, and will include interviews with faculty members.
