Residency Program: Application Process

All 2024-2025 interviews will be held virtually.

Applicants must register with the NRMP (National Resident Matching Program) and apply through the Electronic Residency Applications Service (ERAS).

Students should check with their student or academic affairs office and the NRMP office for details. All applicants are required to electronically send an official medical school transcription, Dean's letter, a Department of Medicine Chair's letter (or designated representative), two additional letters of recommendation from Department of Medicine or other Faculty, USMLE Board Scores (Part One), and a personal statement. Applications must be completed by October 1, 2024.

ERAS Geographic Preferences

Signaling Internal Medicine Residency will be participating in this year's ERAS geographic and program signaling process. Priority for application review and interviews will be given to applicants who signal our program. We encourage applicants who are excited about our program to apply and signal their interest.

CATEGORICAL TRACK

  • NRMP Code: 1062140C0

PHYSICIAN-SCIENTIST TRACK

  • NRMP Code: 1062140C1

We have four tracks leading to internal medicine certification—a Categorical track, a Molecular Medicine Physician-Scientist Training track and two Primary Care Tracks. Our Primary Care Tracks include the UCSF Primary Care General Internal Medicine (UCPC-GIM) Track or the ZSFG (SFPC) Primary Care Track. See above for the four program track numbers. Depending upon your particular interests, you are welcome to apply to and be considered by any or all of these tracks. The two primary care options are particularly well suited for individuals who have already decided upon, or are strongly considering, a generalist focus for their training and career. Applicants applying to a primary care track must apply to BOTH primary care tracks. Our Molecular Medicine and Physician-Scientist Training Track is ideal for MD/PhD candidates who are interested in pursuing the ABIM research pathway (“short-tracking”). Most physician-scientist applicants also choose to apply to our categorical medicine track.

Please plan on reserving one to two days for your virtual introduction to the program and your interviews. A core interview day will provide an overview of the program. All applicants for our categorical program will participate in a categorical interview day. Those applicants also applying to our Primary Care or our Molecular Medicine Physician-Scientist Tracks will have a second separate interview day as well. All interviews for the 2024-25 academic year will be held virtually.. Once you are invited for an interview, we would like to make your virtual time at UCSF as productive as possible. If there are specific faculty members you would like to meet or programs about which you would like to learn more, please let us know and we will do everything possible to accommodate your requests. We look forward to meeting you and introducing you to the most exciting, dynamic training program in the country!

Post-Interview Communication

We are one of many programs who are committed to an equitable match process and have signed the statement on post interview match integrity. We encourage applicants to submit a rank list that reflects only their desire to enroll in programs and not be swayed by post interview communications that can be misleading.
