Differences Matter Initiative

UCSF has made a commitment to Advancing Health Worldwide. Fulfilling this commitment requires that we tackle and solve today’s most challenging problems in biomedical science and healthcare, for everyone. Diverse teams, including people from different backgrounds and with different life experiences, are better at solving complex problems. UCSF’s success in improving the health of our patients and out communities depends on diversifying our disciplines and professions and creating an inclusive an equitable workplace. It is time that we engineer our culture for equity and inclusion so that all may thrive.

Annual Dean's Diversity Reception

An annual welcome event for housestaff and faculty hosted by the Dean of the School of Medicine each fall.

Dean's Diversity Fund Watson Faculty Scholars

The UCSF School of Medicine Dean’s Diversity Fund was established in 2015 to support the recruitment and retention of faculty who share the university’s commitment to diversity and service to underserved or vulnerable populations. Each year eight faculty members are selected. Those faculty who are selected will be named the John A. Watson Scholars in honor of John A. Watson, PhD, a pioneer for diversity, an inspiring mentor, and a tenacious scientist whose service to the UCSF School of Medicine spanned forty-six years. The grants will provide critical support that will allow faculty to develop their academic interests as well as pursue activities that contribute to the community.

UCSF Campus

The Office of Diversity and Outreach

The Office of Diversity and Outreach (ODO) serves as the campus leader in building diversity in all aspects of the UC San Francisco mission through ongoing assessment, development of new programs and building consensus. We collaborate with the four professional schools, the Graduate Division, and the medical centers, to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion across UCSF. The mission of the Office is to build a broadly diverse faculty, student, trainee and staff community, to nurture a culture that is welcoming and supportive, and to engage diverse ideas for the provision of culturally competent education, discovery and patient care. Our priority is to develop and execute a comprehensive strategic plan for diversity and outreach that supports UCSF’s mission of advancing health worldwide, and the recruitment and retention of talented employees and students who contribute to our commitment to diversity and excellence.

GME Diversity Advisory Group

The Office of Graduate Medical Education is committed to training physicians from all backgrounds and cultures and has an interest in developing a diverse community among residents and fellows from all training programs. The GME Diversity Advisory Group (DAG) was as established to promote and support diversity among UCSF residents and clinical fellows. This year the Office of GME’s Diversity Advisory Group is planning several events including many social events, recruitment activities, and opportunities to represent UCSF at various annual meetings of national medical organizations. There are also opportunities to serve on diversity committees within the School of Medicine and the UCSF campus. All trainees interested in increasing the diversity among housestaff at UCSF are welcome to join us at future events. We also encourage all department chairs and program directors to share any ideas or suggestions for future activities.

For more information about the advisory group, please contact Michelle Guy, MD at [email protected].
