Hugo Cheng, MD
Professor
Hugo Quinny Cheng, MD joined the faculty at UCSF in 1996, after completing medical school and residency training in Internal Medicine here.
Dr. Cheng’s main clinical interest is the medical care of surgical patients, including preoperative medical evaluation and the prevention and management of postoperative medical complications. He directs the Medicine Consultation Service at UCSF Medical Center, which performs these functions in a traditional consultation role. In addition, Dr. Cheng developed a novel inpatient service to more intensively address the needs of UCSF’s neurological surgery patients. Rather than simply consulting, the hospitalist on the Comanagement with Neurosurgery Service proactively identifies and assumes the non-surgical care for patients at high-risk for medical complications. This service also coordinates care with consultants, physician extenders, and ancillary services. At UCSF Medical Center's Mission Bay campus, Dr. Cheng developed and leads the hospital medicine consultation service that serves the surgical and obstetric services.
Dr. Cheng’s educational projects also center on perioperative medicine. He regularly lectures on perioperative medicine both at UCSF and to wider audiences through CME programs. He has written and edited articles and textbook chapters and developed printed and web-based teaching aids on this topic. Dr. Cheng also directs an annual CME courses, Advances in Internal Medicine, on behalf of the Department of Medicine.
