Leadership 201: Lessons Learned from Leading Through Pandemics and Political Partisanship
The Holly Smith Visiting Professor Lecture

For the 26th annual Holly Smith Visiting Professorship Grand Rounds, we welcome Carlos del Rio, the chair of the Scientific Advisory Board for the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) and the chair of the Department of Medicine at Emory University School of Medicine. Del Rio will explore successful leadership approaches to high-stakes crises, including global pandemics, online disinformation, and today’s increasingly partisan political divide.

The annual Holly Smith Visiting Professorship is the UCSF Department of Medicine’s most prestigious yearly lectureship. It is named for Lloyd Hollingsworth “Holly” Smith Jr., MD, a visionary physician-scientist whose uncompromising commitment to excellence helped transform UCSF into the world-renowned institution it is today. Smith served as chair of the UCSF Department of Medicine for 21 years, and associate dean for the UCSF School of Medicine for another decade.

Speaker:

Carlos del Rio, MD, is the chair of the Department of Medicine at Emory University School of Medicine and a professor of global health and epidemiology at the Rollins School of Public Health. He also serves as the chair of the Scientific Advisory Board for the United States President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) and is the immediate past president of the Infectious Diseases Society of America. A global leader in HIV research and policy, del Rio's research focuses on access to care, patient engagement, adherence to antiretroviral therapy, and the prevention of HIV infection. He has received the American Public Health Association (APHA) Award for Excellence in Public Health.
