Dr. “Tanya” Vasylyeva is an assistant professor at UC Irvine, in the Department of Population Health and Disease Prevention with a global health emphasis. Tanya is an expert in molecular and socio-behavioral epidemiology, with a particular focus on HIV epidemics in migrant and forcibly displaced populations. Her work is aimed at utilizing phylodynamics and epidemiological modeling to describe the spread of viral infectious diseases in a population and assess different prevention strategies.
Dr. Vasylyeva research interests include vulnerable populations (people who inject drugs, forcibly displaced people, men who have sex with men) at risk for HIV. Her current aim is to develop a framework for socio-molecular epidemiology investigations in forcibly displaced populations.
Current Projects/Studies
“Social network disruption, stigma, and HIV transmission dynamics among forcibly displaced MSM in Ukraine” (supported through NIH R01) 2023-2028.
“Mobility and HIV risks in female sex workers in Western Madagascar” (supported through Branco Weiss Collaborative grants). 2023-2024.
“Differences in M. Tuberculosis strain distribution based on HIV serostatus in patients of a TB clinic in Odessa, Ukraine” (supported through SD CFAR International grant) 2023-2024.
Dr. Vasylyeva studied Chemistry and earned a Master in Management in Public Health while in Ukraine, before earning a second master’s in epidemiology at SUNY in Albany, NY. Returning to Ukraine she became a project director of a large-scale HIV prevention program in Ukraine, which has one of the worst HIV rates in all of Europe. After this project, Dr Vasylyeva earned a PhD in molecular epidemiology at the University of Oxford, exploring how portable genetic sequencing technology and molecular epidemiology can be applied to catastrophic events to estimate times and locations of chronic viral infection transmission in populations of forced migrants. She served as an assistant professor at UC San Diego’s Department of Medicine before transitioning to UC Irvine in Oct 2023.

The EPPIcenter at UCSF aims to advance the understanding of infectious diseases to reduce global morbidity and mortality. We believe that the greatest success in the fight against infectious diseases will come through a highly interdisciplinary, systems epidemiology approach, connecting traditionally siloed theoretical work, technology development, generation and collection of empiric data, and analysis using statistical and mathematical modeling.
