-

Session moderated by Bob Wachter

From leveraging EHR data to using real-world evidence for drug discovery, our next Medicine Grand Rounds will delve into how developments in data science are advancing patient care and research. Uma Mahadevan, MD, professor in the Division of Gastroenterology at UCSF Health, will discuss how data applies to research. Marina Sirota, PhD, assistant professor at the Bakar Computational Health Sciences Institute at UCSF, will describe the new era of precision medicine. Erica Farrand, MD, assistant professor in the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, Allergy and Sleep Medicine at UCSF Health, will review the UCSF resources available for real-world data analysis. Atul Butte, MD, PhD, director of the Bakar Computational Health Sciences Institute at UCSF and chief data scientist for the entire University of California Health System, will view this topic through a UC-wide lens.

Speakers:
Uma Mahadevan, MD, is a professor in the Division of Gastroenterology at UCSF Health, director of the UCSF Colitis and Crohn’s Disease Center and director of the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Fellowship. Uma is a fellow of the American Gastroenterological Association and the American College of Gastroenterology.

Marina Sirota, PhD, is an assistant professor at the Bakar Computational Health Sciences Institute at UCSF, where she develops computational integrative methods and applying them to disease diagnostics and therapeutics. She is also the director of the AI4ALL program at UCSF, with the goal of introducing high school girls to applications of AI and machine learning in biomedicine.

Erica Farrand, MD is an assistant professor in the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, Allergy and Sleep Medicine at UCSF Health. Her scholarship focuses on defining, assessing and improving the health care quality, safety and outcomes for individuals with interstitial lung disease.

Atul Butte, MD, PhD is the Priscilla Chan and Mark Zuckerberg distinguished professor and inaugural director of the Bakar Computational Health Sciences Institute at UCSF. Atul is also the chief data scientist for the entire University of California Health System.

We are pleased to welcome you back to in-person Grand Rounds. The UCSF community can join us at Parnassus at HSW-300 (lunch provided); our extended community can still watch live on Zoom or at their convenience on our YouTube channel.
