Department of Medicine Grand Rounds: Our Emerging Understanding of the Gut Microbiome in Health and Disease

-

Susan Lynch, PhD, is a Professor of Medicine in the Division of Gastroenterology and Director of the Benioff Center for Microbiome Medicine. Her research focuses on the contributions of human microbiomes to the origins and maintenance of chronic inflammatory disease. Her microbiome research program spans human population-based studies to cellular and molecular mechanisms of disease. These efforts are aimed at understanding the origins and mechanisms by which microbiomes promote inflammatory disease over temporal and spatial gradients. Her group has pioneered the development and application of integrative statistical analytical approaches to multi-modal microbiome and immunological data sets and has developed novel ex vivo and in vivo models to assess the capacity of human microbiota, specific microbial species or their molecular products to program immune cell training and function. Dr. Lynch also serves as the Associate Director of the Microbiome in Inflammatory Bowel Disease Research Program at UCSF. She co-founded and serves as a board member and consultant for Siolta Therapeutics Inc, a biotech company focused on testing the efficacy of novel, rationally designed microbiome interventions for prevention and treatment of allergic disease.

Najwa El-Nachef, MD, is a gastroenterologist with special interests in gut microbiome and Inflammatory Bowel Disease. She established UCSF's program for fecal microbiota transplant (FMT) and co-directs UCSF's Microbial Restoration Therapy program. She also serves as the program director for the Gastroenterology Fellowship.
