A Conversation with Kirsten Bibbins-Domingo, Ezekiel Emanuel, and Andy Slavitt: The Implications of the Election on the Future of the Pandemic
Session moderated by Bob Wachter
This week, the UCSF Department of Medicine Covid-19 Grand Rounds will explore the implications of the election on the future of the pandemic. We’ll hear from three experts with deep experience in health policy and politics.
Panelists:

Kirsten Bibbins-Domingo is Chair of the UCSF Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, the Lee Goldman, MD Endowed Professor of Medicine, and the inaugural Vice Dean for Population Health and Health Equity in the UCSF School of Medicine. She co-founded the UCSF Center for Vulnerable Populations at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and leads the UCSF COVID Community Public Health Initiative. From 2014-2017, she chaired the US Preventive Services Task Force, which, among other things, makes policy recommendations on vaccines for the nation.

Ezekiel Emanuel is the Vice Provost for Global Initiatives, the Diane v.S. Levy and Robert M. Levy University Professor, and Co-Director of the Healthcare Transformation Institute at the University of Pennsylvania. From 2009 to 2011, he served as a Special Advisor on Health Policy to the Director of the Office of Management and Budget and National Economic Council, also under President Obama. He has published over 300 articles mainly on health care reform, research ethics, and end of life care, and authored or edited 15 books, including his 2020 book, Which Country Has the World’s Best Health Care?

Andy Slavitt began his career as a healthcare consultant and senior executive. He then entered public service, rising to become the Director of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) in the Obama administration. In that role, he managed a one-trillion dollar budget, and was a proponent of value-based payment, healthcare quality, and digital transformation. He was also a key leader in the implementation of the Affordable Care Act. During the Covid-19 crisis, he has been a highly effective spokesperson for an empathic and science-based approach through scores of media appearances, his “In the Bubble” podcast, and frequent tweets to over 600,000 followers.
