Protecting the Legitimacy of Medical Expertise: Combating Misinformation in Medicine

Session moderated by Bob Wachter

Medical misinformation, often provided under the cover of freedom of speech, can lead to a mistrust of science and ultimately harm to patients. While misinformation has always challenged the health care system, the problem came into stark relief during the Covid-19 pandemic – with deadly consequences. Dr. Richard Baron, the President and CEO of the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) and the ABIM Foundation, has been a leading voice in efforts to combat medical misinformation and its harmful effects on the physician-patient relationship and the health care system. In this Medicine Grand Rounds, he'll analyze the threat of misinformation and the medical profession's role in combating it.

Richard J. Baron, MD, MACP, board certified in internal medicine and geriatric medicine, is president and chief executive officer of the American Board of Internal Medicine and the ABIM Foundation. He was a former chair of the American Board of Internal Medicine’s Board of Directors and served on the ABIM Foundation Board of Trustees. Dr. Baron practiced general internal medicine and geriatrics for almost 30 years at Greenhouse Internists, P.C., located in Philadelphia.

This Grand Rounds will be hybrid, with both in-person and Zoom options. The UCSF community can join us at Parnassus at N-217 (lunch provided); our extended community can still watch live on Zoom. As always, Grand Rounds will also be available after the live presentation on our  YouTube channel.
