Mary O. Gray named chief of the Division of Cardiology at ZSFG
Mary O. Gray, MD, has been named the new chief of the UCSF Division of Cardiology at ZSFG, effective immediately.
Mary received her undergraduate degree in English Literature and Biology from Stanford University, and went on to earn her MD from the UC San Diego School of Medicine, where she completed Internal Medicine residency and was selected as chief medical resident. Mary moved to UCSF for Cardiology fellowship and worked with Joel Karliner, MD, and Neal Benowitz, MD, to advance understanding of heart disease and clinical pharmacology. Her career development was supported by the NIH, the Department of Veterans Affairs, and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. She then joined the UCSF Division of Cardiology at ZSFG faculty, rising to the rank of full professor. Mary has skillfully led the division as interim chief since June 2024.
Mary’s career is dedicated to academic excellence and the humanitarian mission of ZSFG. She expands patient access to high-quality care for cardiovascular disorders, thereby benefitting individuals from every walk of life. Her ZSFG leadership roles connect physicians, nurses, clinical pharmacists, and informatics experts across services to decrease healthcare risks and improve delivery systems. Mary, a member of the Department of Medicine Council of Master Clinicians, is passionate about teaching and mentoring, especially interprofessional education. She is a consultant for ZSFG patients who develop cardiac conditions during pregnancy and is invited to discuss clinical scenarios and guidelines with global audiences. Mary was selected to serve on the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) Cardiovascular Disease Item-Writing Task Force, a powerful platform for shaping high-impact assessment tools used by practicing cardiologists. She also received the 2025 John Murray Award for Excellence in Internal Medicine from the Department of Medicine at ZSFG.
Mary is an exceptional leader, clinician, and educator, and we are thrilled that she will be serving as our new division chief. Please join us in warmly welcoming her to this critical role.
