Harrison PhD published "Psychosocial distress among spouses of persons with dementia before and after their partner's death" in JAGS.

Key Points:

  • This study compares the psychosocial needs of spouses of persons living with dementia with spouses of persons with no cognitive impairment 2 years before and after their partner's death using a nationally representative survey.
  • Before their partner's death, spouses of persons living with dementia had increased loneliness and depressive symptoms and lower life satisfaction compared with spouses of persons with no cognitive impairment.
  • After their partner's death, spouses had strikingly high levels of loneliness and depression persisting for 2 years that were similar across their partner's cognitive status.

Reflecting on these findings, the editor notes: "As clinicians, we should be mindful that serious illness in a spouse is itself a cause of suffering that begins in the period before death and can be greatly magnified in its aftermath. We need better ways to support all spouses as they move through their loved ones' final illness and death, especially those who may be most vulnerable to sustained distress and prolonged grief." -Soo Borson, MD
