We performed a retrospective study of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in people with human immunodeficiency virus (PWH). PWH with COVID-19 demonstrated severe lymphopenia and decreased CD4+ T cell counts. Levels of inflammatory markers, including C-reactive protein, fibrinogen, D-dimer, interleukin 6, interleukin 8, and tumor necrosis factor α were commonly elevated. In all, 19 of 72 hospitalized individuals (26.4%) died and 53 (73.6%) recovered. PWH who died had higher levels of inflammatory markers and more severe lymphopenia than those who recovered. These findings suggest that PWH remain at risk for severe manifestations of COVID-19 despite antiretroviral therapy and that those with increased markers of inflammation and immune dysregulation are at risk for worse outcomes.

BACKGROUND
While growing evidence suggests a link between periodontal disease (PD) and cardiovascular disease (CVD), the independence of this association and the pathway remain unclear. Herein, we tested the hypotheses that: (1) inflammation of the periodontium (PD ) predicts future CVD independently of disease risk factors shared between CVD and PD, and (2) the mechanism linking the two diseases involves heightened arterial inflammation.
METHODS
F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography ( F-FDG-PET/CT) imaging was performed in 304 individuals (median age 54 years; 42.4% male) largely for cancer screening; individuals without active cancer were included. PD and arterial inflammation were quantified using validated F-FDG-PET/CT methods. Additionally, we evaluated the relationship between PD and subsequent major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) using Cox models and log-rank tests.
RESULTS
Thirteen individuals developed MACE during follow-up (median 4.1 years). PD associated with arterial inflammation, remaining significant after adjusting for PD and CVD risk factors (standardized β [95% CI]: 0.30 [0.20-0.40], P < 0.001). PD predicted subsequent MACE (standardized HR [95% CI]: 2.25 [1.47 to 3.44], P <0.001, remaining significant in multivariable models), while periodontal bone loss did not. Furthermore, mediation analysis suggested that arterial inflammation accounts for 80% of the relationship between PD and MACE (standardized log odds ratio [95% CI]: 0.438 [0.019-0.880], P = 0.022).
CONCLUSION
PD is independently associated with MACE via a mechanism that may involve increased arterial inflammation. These findings provide important support for an independent relationship between PD and CVD.

This study gathered preliminary data on the impact of the U.S. response to the COVID-19 pandemic on the substance use, sexual behavior, and general well-being of U.S. college students. Participants from colleges across the U.S. (N = 212; 50.5% female; age = 22.09) completed an online survey between May 20 and July 5, 2020 about COVID-19-related behavior change. Most students reported a decrease in quality of life (71.7%), an increase in levels of anxiety (63.7%), and problems with basic resource needs (53.8%). Reports of alcohol consumption increased for 26.9% of students and 15.1% reported an increase in cannabis use. Most students (57.5%) reported a decrease in sexual activity, yet access to, and use of, condoms generally remained unchanged. As universities resume residential instruction, existing prevention and intervention services will need to be adapted to address the mental and behavioral health needs of college students during the era of COVID-19.

OBJECTIVE
To describe clinical characteristics and associated endometrial findings of transgender and gender nonbinary people using gender-affirming testosterone.
DESIGN
Retrospective case series.
SETTING
Academic medical center and public safety net hospital.
PATIENT(S)
Eighty-one patients using gender-affirming testosterone therapy undergoing hysterectomy for the indication of gender affirmation from 2000 to 2018.
INTERVENTION(S)

MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE(S)
Preoperative clinical characteristics and endometrium surgical pathology diagnoses.
RESULT(S)
Median age was 31 years (interquartile range [IQR] 27-40), and median body mass index 27 kg/m (IQR 24-30). Six patients (7%) were parous and 60 (74%) had amenorrhea. Thirty-three patients (40%) had proliferative and 40 (50%) atrophic endometrium. Endometrial polyps were found in nine patients (11%) of the sample. Endometrial findings were similar in the subgroup of 60 patients with preoperative amenorrhea. There were no cases of endometrial hyperplasia or malignancy. In bivariate analysis, those with proliferative endometrium were found to be, on average, 5.6 years younger than those with atrophic endometrium. There were no clinical factors associated with having proliferative versus atrophic endometrium in multivariable models.
CONCLUSION(S)
People using gender-affirming testosterone may have either proliferative or atrophic endometrium, including people who present with amenorrhea. Further study is needed to develop evidence-based guidelines for appropriate screening for endometrial hyperplasia or cancer in this population.
