Aida Venado estrada, MD

Associate Professor

Pulmonary, Critical Care, Allergy and Sleep Medicine

Clinical Activities
Dr. Venado is a Pulmonary and Critical Care physician who specializes in treating patients with interstitial lung disease and patients with advanced lung disease who undergo lung transplantation.

Research and Quality Activities
In collaboration with the transplant team at UCSF, she described the natural history of frailty in patients that undergo lung transplantation. She found that pre-operative frailty rapidly improves in the six months following lung transplant. Dr. Venado and the UCSF team then demonstrated that frailty after lung transplant is associated with increased mortality and found that transplant-related complications, such as renal disease, obesity, and malnutrition, can induce frailty.
Dr. Venado is the founder of the Quality in Lung Transplant Care (QUILT) initiative at UCSF, which leverages real-world data monitoring to aim for care that preserves lung allograft function with the least possible complications of immunosuppression.
Dr. Venado serves as the Director for Quality and Safety for the Pulmonary Division at UCSF.

Activities to support Diversity
As a native Spanish speaker, Dr. Venado aims to overcome language and cultural barriers when caring for Latinx patients with advanced lung disease and lung transplant recipients.
Dr. Venado served as co-chair for the Women in Pulmonary Medicine group at UCSF.
