Maria Ruiz received the Julius R. Krevans Award
Maria Ruiz is the 2025 recipient of the Julius R. Krevans Award from the ZSFG Department of Medicine.
This award was established in 1979 in honor of Dr. Julius R. Krevans and honors an intern from each department at ZSFG who exhibits clinical excellence, professionalism, and commitment to the patients of Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center while embodying the ZSFG mission to care for the underserved.
ZSFG medical staff, chief residents, and UCSF medicine residents all contributed to the nominations of recipients:
“In one of her first outpatient clinics, Dr. Ruiz saw a woman who was suffering from a new diagnosis of stage IV ovarian cancer. Her patient needed better pain control and a full understanding of the anti-coagulants she was on. She and her son were scared, angry, and had not received any health care prior to this diagnosis. Dr. Ruiz was able to listen and hear their concerns in a calm and compassionate manner and so was better able to treat the woman effectively. I think Maria Ruiz is a deserving and exemplary recipient of the Krevans award.”
“Dr. Ruiz is esteemed for a leadership style that prioritizes access to precious resources and emerging technologies for individuals from every walk of life. Maria’s confidence, accountability, generosity, and informed decisions elevate our team’s performance.”
“If there were any intern I would want to be my doctor, it would be her. She is incredibly knowledgeable, and I know she would work to understand my values and come up with a patient centered plan. She is exactly the kind of doctor that SFGH needs more of and the one that exemplifies the best of what a physician can be.”
