Joel Ernst, M.D., the Chief of Experimental Medicine, was featured in the School of Medicine's Bridging the Gap: From Curiosity to Cure. Dr. Ernst notes, “The reason there’s no smallpox is because we learned to harness the immune response against smallpox and eradicate it. We would like to be able to eradicate tuberculosis by harnessing the immune response, and we’d like to make TB hospitals as obsolete as the smallpox hospitals….” (2019).
