Department of Medicine Grand Rounds
Session moderated by Bob Wachter
Meet the new chief of the Division of Prevention Science at UCSF, Jesus Ramirez-Valles, PhD, MPH, at his first UCSF Department of Medicine Grand Rounds. He will provide a unique perspective on how ‘the researcher’ and ‘the researched’ interconnect in health equity research. In his talk, he’ll explore topics including structural discrimination and stigma in health care and how to advance anti-racism efforts in science.
Speaker:
Jesus Ramirez-Valles, PhD, MPH, is chief of the UCSF Division of Prevention Science. His research and advocacy have centered on the challenges of health and health care for historically excluded communities, including LGBTQI populations, people of color, and women. He has published two books: Compañeros: Latino Activists in the Face of AIDS, and Queer Aging: The Gayby Boomers and a New Frontier for Gerontology. He is currently editor-in-chief of Health Education and Behavior. His 2007 documentary, “Tal Como Somos/Just As We Are,” chronicles the lives of Latino gay men, transgender persons and people living with HIV/AIDS.
