UCSF Alumni Panel: Public Service-Oriented Careers with Amanda Johnson, Carmen Peralta, and Tomas Aragon
In this panel discussion, we will hear from three UCSF residency alumni who are leaders in three different types of public health-oriented organizations. Tomás Aragón, director of the California Department of Public Health and state public health officer, has been a voice of public health throughout the Covid-19 pandemic. We will learn how he exercises leadership and legal authority to protect health and prevent disease. Amanda Johnson, assistant vice president of care models at NYC Health + Hospitals, leads a team that cares for people facing structural barriers to healthcare. Carmen Peralta, chief clinical officer at Interwell Health, will discuss her work in a healthcare company committed to delivering value-based care.
Speakers
Tomás Aragón, MD, DrPH, has served as the director of the California Department of Public Health and as the state public health officer since January 2021. Prior to CDPH, he was the health officer for the City and County of San Francisco and director of the public health division. Tomás has served in public health leadership roles for more than 20 years, including directing a public health emergency preparedness and response research and training center at UC-Berkeley. He completed his residency at UCSF in Internal Medicine in 1991.
Amanda K. Johnson, MD, MBA, is the assistant vice president of Care Models in the Office of Ambulatory Care and Population Health for NYC Heath + Hospitals. She previously served as interim chief medical officer at Sydenham Health Center and directed the Take Care program within the Test & Trace Corps. She currently leads Test & Treat’s AfterCare program for long COVID and provides integrated primary care and substance use disorder care. Amanda completed her residency at UCSF in Internal Medicine in 2017 and was chief resident from 2017-2018.
Carmen A. Peralta, MD, MAS, is chief clinical officer at Interwell Health, a value-based kidney care management company, which uses big data and predictive analytics to build a patient-focused model of care. She was formerly a professor of Medicine at UCSF, where she co-founded and served as the inaugural executive director of the Kidney Health Research Collaborative (KHRC). She completed an Ambulatory Care Fellowship in 2006 and a Nephrology Fellowship in 2008, both at UCSF.
