Supporting Struggling Learners in the Department of Medicine
This Grand Rounds will examine how struggling learners are defined within medical education, the common features and prevalence of learner difficulties, and how the UCSF Department of Medicine identifies and approaches these situations. Medical trainees may struggle for many reasons, including knowledge gaps, learning differences, challenges with clinical reasoning, communication, or professionalism, as well as personal stressors. Early recognition and thoughtful support are critical to helping learners succeed while maintaining high standards for patient care and professional development.
Speakers: Lynnea Mills, MD, PhD, is a professor of medicine in the Division of Hospital Medicine at UCSF Health and director of the UCSF Acting Internship in Medicine. She was previously chair of the residency Clinical Competency Committee and director of accreditation for UCSF Graduate Medical Education. Mills is founder and director of a cross-departmental coaching program for struggling residents and fellows and leads a remediation coaching program for the UCSF School of Medicine.
Alyssa Perez, MD, MEd, is an assistant professor of medicine in the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, Allergy, and Sleep Medicine at UCSF Health and an associate program director for both the Pulmonary and Critical Care Fellowship Program and the Internal Medicine Residency Program.
