The Cough Won't Stop: Updates in Bronchiectasis, from Airways to Bugs

In this Medical Grand Rounds, Catherine DeVoe and Shoshana Zha will delve into the latest advancements in managing bronchiectasis, non-tuberculous mycobacterial (NTM) lung disease, and non-antimicrobial therapies. The speakers will provide practical strategies for distinguishing exacerbations from chronic symptoms, selecting the right antibiotic regimen for acute flare-ups, and exploring non-antimicrobial treatments aimed at halting disease progression. Attendees will sharpen their diagnostic skills in identifying pulmonary NTM lung disease and learn to apply patient-centered approaches that optimize treatment tolerance and ensure successful therapy completion.

Speakers:

Catherine DeVoe, MD, is an assistant professor in the Division of Infectious Diseases at UCSF Health. Her research focuses on infections in immunocompromised hosts, as well as pulmonary and extrapulmonary nontuberculous mycobacterial infections. She works closely with Shoshana Zha as the associate director of the Bronchiectasis and Pulmonary NTM Clinic at UCSF Health, which provides fully integrated infectious disease and pulmonary care to NTM patients from across Northern California.

Shoshana Zha, MD, PhD, assistant professor in Pulmonary, Critical Care, Allergy and Sleep Medicine at UCSF Health, specializes in the care of patients with bronchiectasis and nontuberculous mycobacterial pulmonary infections. She co-founded the Bronchiectasis and Pulmonary NTM Clinic at UCSF Health. Zha also runs a clinical translational research program focused on elucidating external and internal variables that lead to pulmonary NTM disease and impact outcomes in bronchiectasis patients.
