How Hospital Norms and Organizational Factors Shape End-of-Life Care

Department of Medicine Grand Rounds
-

Today's medical innovations can keep people alive longer, but hospital culture and organizational structures also influence how high-intensity, potentially non-beneficial treatments are used near the end of life. Drawing on examples from the United States and the United Kingdom, this Grand Rounds will examine how institutional factors shape communication and decision-making around serious illness and highlight system-level strategies to improve medically appropriate, goal-concordant care.

Speaker:
Elizabeth Dzeng, MD, PhD, MPH, MPhil, MS, is a sociologist and academic physician who conducts research at the nexus of sociology, ethics, palliative care, and human-centered design. She is an associate professor in the UCSF Divisions of Hospital Medicine and Geriatrics, a core faculty member at the Philip R. Lee Institute for Health Policy Studies, and a senior research fellow at the Cicely Saunders Institute at King’s College London. She previously served on the Society of General Internal Medicine Governing Council Executive Committee and currently serves on the editorial board of the Journal of General Internal Medicine. A Gates Cambridge Scholar, she completed clinical research and palliative care fellowships at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, as well as a PhD in Sociology from the University of Cambridge (England). Her work is supported by several federal and foundation grants.
