QI Portfolio for Academic Advancement

In April 2011, the Department of Medicine approved the addition of a "QI Portfolio" to the promotion process. The goal of the QI Portfolio is to highlight, foster, and reward faculty who are engaged in Systems Innovation, Quality Improvement and Patient Safety activities as part of the promotion process.

The new guidelines recognized the growing need to explicitly acknowledge such faculty activities, and builds on recommendations for a "Quality Portfolio" that mirrors the Educator's Portfolio already in use at UCSF. The QI Portfolio is designed to better capture the activities and accomplishments of faculty engaged in this work, regardless of whether this is their career focus (e.g. Director of Quality or QI curriculum director), a critical task force they contribute to (e.g. Joint Commission Core Measure task force, Operating Room committee, or Medication Safety workgroup, etc.), or an element of their professional work not captured elsewhere in the CV. We believe adopting these guidelines is a critical 1st step towards formally acknowledging the importance of this work to our Department's mission.
