Beta-Lactam Antibiotic Allergies: Using the Inpatient Beta-Lactam Allergy Guideline to Evaluate Penicillin and Cephalosporin Allergies

Iris Otani, MD, is an allergist/immunologist based at Parnassus. After graduating Stanford University, she completed medical school at UCSD School of Medicine, internal medicine residency at SCVMC, and allergy/immunology fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital. She joined the faculty at UCSF in 2016Iris Otani, MD and is currently associate program director for the UCSF Allergy/Immunology Fellowship and the medical and quality improvement director for Adult Allergy/Immunology. Her main interest is in improving evaluation and management of drug allergies. Her activities include collaborations with the Antibiotic Stewardship Program to implement an inpatient beta-lactam antibiotic allergy evaluation guideline, Oncology to standardize chemotherapy allergy evaluation and management, and Pulmonary to streamline allergy/immunology evaluations for cystic fibrosis and lung transplant patients. She currently serves as the Vice-Chair for the American College of Allergy Asthma Immunology Accreditation and Certification Committee and on the Editorial Board for the Annals of Allergy Asthma and Immunology.
