Implications of the 2024 Election on Health Policy
Session moderated by Bob Wachter
The upcoming 2024 election has profound implications for health policy, and we can think of no better national expert to discuss this with than Ashish Jha, currently Dean of the Brown University School of Public Health. Ashish served as White House COVID-19 Coordinator in 2022-2023, and was director of Harvard’s Global Health Institute from 2014-2020.
Ashish, who was a UCSF resident and chief resident in the late 1990s, is arguably the nation’s leading expert in evidence-based healthcare policy. In literally hundreds of national media appearances, he was a trusted source of information during the COVID era. We’ll discuss the health policy proposal of the current presidential candidates, reflect on the key issues facing the healthcare system, and try to predict the future of U.S. health care policy.
This grand rounds is virtual only; we’ll return to our hybrid format the following week.
Speaker: Ashish K. Jha, MD, MPH, serves as dean of the Brown University School of Public Health and is a global leader in public health research, policy, and practice. President Biden appointed Jha as White House COVID-19 response coordinator in March 2022 to lead the development of and access to treatments and newly formulated vaccines, improve testing and surveillance, rebuild strategic national stockpiles, facilitate investments in improving indoor air quality, and implement the infrastructure to respond to current and future disease outbreaks. He has received bipartisan praise for his pragmatic approach to public health that, in the words of President Biden, “translates...complex scientific challenges into concrete actions.” Jha is also one of the most highly cited researchers in the nation, having published more than three hundred articles in the peer-reviewed literature. Before becoming dean at Brown, he was the K.T. Li professor of global health at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, where he also served as the director of the Harvard Global Health Institute.
