From the Program Director

Welcome to the UCSF Medicine Residency website. I am delighted that you are interested in our program. UCSF is a special place, where the excitement about great clinical care, education, and scholarly activity is enhanced by deeply held values of health equity and public service. Through experiences at diverse training sites in San Francisco and beyond, residents in our program are exposed to the broadest possible range of patients and faculty, leading to an incredibly rich clinical experience. In a recent Doximity/U.S. News survey on internal medicine residency programs, UCSF was ranked among the top four in the nation. We are proud to be one of a small number of select programs who participated in the ACGME's Educational Innovation Project, a program which allowed us to be innovative and lead the way in Graduate Medical Education reform.

Beyond rigorous clinical training and an innovative curriculum, the program has a long history of its graduates becoming leaders in virtually every niche within the broad confines of internal medicine. UCSF residents can choose categorical or primary care tracks, depending upon career goals and preferences for different training models. Beyond this, upper year residents may choose to devote time to one of our multidisciplinary Areas of Distinction/Pathways to Discovery, which are designed to provide complementary skills and personalized training and mentoring. Examples of these pathways include Molecular Medicine, Global Health, and Health Equities. In this manner, we try to maximize the contact between like-minded learners and departmental faculty, and raise the level of scholarship and inquiry during the training years.

If you are pursuing internal medicine training, we believe that we are uniquely positioned to give you both top notch academic training and a tailored experience which will jump start your career in medicine. We are proud to present the program for your consideration and look forward to seeing many of you in San Francisco.

Sincerely,

Harry Hollander, MD
