The Department’s faculty, staff and trainees represent many divergent backgrounds. The Department has been recognized annually by UCSF for its best practices in Staff and Academic Diversity since 1999, the first year of honoring such efforts.

In November 2016 the Department held its inaugural Diversity and Inclusion retreat to create discrete, implementable action items to increase diversity and inclusion within the Department. Among the outcomes was to institute a holistic review of all Underrepresented-in-Medicine (UIM) residency applicants for the current application season. This effort has doubled the number of UIM candidates we will interview this year.

To better serve the multi-ethnic population of California, the Residency Diversity Committee was first established in 1993. It’s primary goals are to increase the number of trainees who are underrepresented in medicine and to promote a more accepting and friendly atmosphere for them in the Department.
