Since 1864, the UCSF School of Medicine and San Francisco General Hospital (SFGH) have worked in close collaboration to provide health care services for the people of San Francisco, under the umbrella of the San Francisco Department of Public Health. The Department of Medicine maintains a significant presence at SFGH, a general acute care hospital and the only Trauma 1 center in the City. Approximately 110 faculty members and 450 staff in the Department reside at "the General."

The Department's mission here is bold and noble. We strive to ensure that all patients have access to and receive the best care possible while integrating the education and research programs at UCSF with the clinical programs at SFGH. To that end, we provide quality, culturally appropriate healthcare services to "vulnerable populations," which include the uninsured, homeless, children, elderly, low income, racial and ethnic minorities and people from targeted low-come neighborhoods. We also maintain a thriving research program and a nationally renowned academic teaching program.

Overview of Activities

The SFGH Medical Service serves the three overarching missions of the University and the Department of Medicine: patient care, medical education and research. In each, the highest standards are expected and achieved. The specific activities and operations are influenced by the SFGH patient population.

Excellent, culturally appropriate patient care is a primary focus at SFGH. Faculty and staff are dedicated to assuring that the highest quality medical care is provided to all. More than 48,000 outpatient clinic visits and inpatient admissions are logged in a typical year.

At SFGH, the mission of medical education is to produce well-rounded clinicians prepared for either the practice of general internal medicine or further training in medicine subspecialties. The program strives to provide residents with progressive patient responsibilities consistent with their level of training.

Research is also an essential activity within the SFGH Medical Service. With over $42 million in research funding, the Department of Medicine at SFGH alone (excluding the Department of Medicine at Parnassus and other sites) would be ranked approximately 30th in the country among Departments of Medicine at the approximately 124 accredited US medical schools.
