Dear DOM Faculty and Staff,

One year ago, the Department drafted its first Strategic Plan, with the input and work of more than 100 faculty, staff, and trainees.  Our ambitious goal is to make the UCSF Department of Medicine the best in the country.

We write now with news about the first steps in the implementation of our Strategic Plan .

First, we thank the many faculty, staff, and trainees who have moved our Strategic Priorities forward over the last year.  You have made a big difference already.

Our seven Strategic Priorities are being led by 21 faculty and staff “Champions.”  These include:

o    Clinical :  Alice Chen, Niraj Sehgal, and Kevin McLaren

o    Education :  Pat Cornett, Beth Harleman, and Sue Sheehan

o    Research :  Dave Gardner, Jackie Maher, and Suzanne Sutton

o    Public Policy :  Andy Bindman and Bonnie Johnson

o    Recruitment and Retention :  Elyse Foster, Katy Rau, and Jenny Schreiber

o    Unified DOM :  Seth Landefeld, Margaret Wheeler, Tracy Schaefer, and Erik Wieland

o    Economic Model :  Michael Chen, Maye Chrisman, and Talmadge King

We have developed a website to facilitate work on the Priorities and so all faculty, staff, and trainees can learn how the Plan is unfolding:  http://medicine.ucsf.edu/strategicplan/    Our Communications Team has just begun building the content for the website, which will grow over the coming weeks.

We have recruited Suzanne Kawahara, MBA, as Project Manager for the Strategic Plan.  Suzanne Kawahara is an entrepreneurial management professional with broadly diversified expertise in business development, strategic planning, management and support services. She has worked in a wide variety of organizations including research universities, independent schools, financial institutions and startup companies.

Here are a few examples of our accomplishments to date:

  • Appointment of  C. Seth Landefeld as the Associate Chair for Strategic Planning and Implementation, effective March 1, 2010.
  • Appointment of Suzanne Kawahara as Project Manager for the DOM Strategic Plan, effective July 27, 2010.
  • Appointment of Naama Neeman as DOM’s Administrative Director of Quality & Safety Programs, effective early September 2010.
  • Strategic Priority Teams are being built, initially engaging over 50 faculty, staff, and trainees.
  • The first “All Chiefs Meetings” of Division Chiefs from SFGH, VAMC and Parnassus/Mt. Zion were held in February and June. The next All Chiefs Meeting will be held at SFVAMC, and subsequent All Chiefs Meeting will rotate between SFGH, Parnassus, and SFVAMC.
  • To build a shared commitment to funding the Department’s core missions, especially education, the way the Department uses clinical revenues and state funding has been discussed in detail with Division Chiefs and leadership of the School and UCSF Medical Center.

With this note, we will begin updating all faculty, staff, and trainees regularly about the Strategic Priorities.

We welcome your questions, input, and participation.  Please contact either of us or Suzanne Kawahara at any time.

With warm regards,

Talmadge E. King, Jr., MD
