The Department of Medicine at San Francisco General Hospital
Since 1864, the UCSF School of Medicine and San Francisco General Hospital (SFGH) have worked in close collaboration to provide health care services for the people of San Francisco, under the umbrella of the San Francisco Department of Public Health. The Department of Medicine maintains a significant presence at SFGH, a general acute care hospital and the only Trauma 1 center in the City. Approximately 110 faculty members and 450 staff in the Department reside at "the General." The Department's mission here is bold and noble. We strive to ensure that all patients have access to and receive the best care possible while integrating the education and research programs at UCSF with the clinical programs at SFGH. To that end, we provide quality, culturally appropriate healthcare services to "vulnerable populations," which include the uninsured, homeless, children, elderly, low income, racial and ethnic minorities and people from targeted low-come neighborhoods. We also maintain a thriving research program and a nationally renowned academic teaching program.
