MARK A. JACOBSON, M.D., Associate Professor of Medicine
The major focus of Dr. Jacobson's research currently involves Phase 1, 2 and 3 studies of antimicrobial therapy and prophylaxis for HIV-associated opportunistic infections. Studies of antiviral regimens for AIDS-associated cytomegalovirus disease, antimycobacterial and immunomodulator regimens for treatment for AIDS-associated disseminated M. avium complex infection, and immunomodulator regimens for treatment of HIV disease are in progress.
Recently completed studies included combined foscarnet and ganciclovir therapy for cytomegalovirus retinitis, valacyclovir for prophylaxis of cytomegalovirus retinitis, combination antimycobacterial regimens for disseminated M. avium complex (MAC) infection, and pyrimethamine versus clindamycin prophylaxis for toxoplasmic encephalitis. Ongoing studies include recombinant human interleukin-12 (rhIL-12) for HIV disease, rhIL-12 for disseminated MAC infection, and oral ganciclovir for cytomegalovirus gastrointestinal disease.
