PHARMACOGENOMICS

ESTEBAN GONZÁLEZ BURCHARD, M.D., Assistant Professor, Biopharmaceutical Sciences and Clinical Pharmacology, Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care, Departments of Medicine and Biopharmaceutical Sciences

Dr. Esteban Burchard’s research focuses on identifying ethnic-specific genetic risk factors for asthma, asthma severity and drug responsiveness. He is studying biological and genetic risk factors for asthma among Latino Americans (Genetics of Asthma in Latino Americans, GALA study) and in African Americans (Genetic & Environmental Risk Factors in Ethnically Diverse Asthmatic and Therapeutic Groups, GREAT study). His team uses a family based approach (transmission/disequilibrium test or TDT) to identify genetic variants among asthma candidate genes. Identified variants are analyzed to determine whether these alleles are associated with asthma and asthma severity among these populations. Dr. Burchard is also developing methods to apply population based genetic studies to ethnically admixed populations. In addition, Dr. Burchard’s team is performing whole genome association and admixture mapping studies to identifying genes related to asthma and drug responsiveness in Latino and African Americans.
