Research Interests:
The primary focus of my research is antimalarial drug efficacy in Uganda.  We have conducted a series of clinical trials comparing new combinations of antimalarial regimens for treatment of uncomplicated malaria in Kampala, and we are currently assembling a large cohort of Ugandan children to evaluate the efficacy, safety, and tolerability of three different combination antimalarial regimens over 3 years. In addition, for my PhD thesis project (London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, Department of Infectious and Tropical Diseases), we plan to assemble a second cohort of children to assess the effectiveness of antimalarial drugs at the community level. In this study we will evaluate the utility of home-based management of fever, using artemether + lumefantrine (Coartem) for presumptive treatment of malaria, comparing it with the current standard of care.  The impact of home-based management of fever on malaria-associated morbidity and economic parameters will be assessed.  My additional research interests include antimalarial drug policy, assessment of drug safety and evaluation of adverse events, and cost-effectiveness of antimalarial interventions.
