Wendy Anderson, M.D. is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at UCSF, and a clinician-researcher with Hospitalist Group and Palliative Care Service. She attended medical school at the University of California, San Diego, and completed residency in Internal Medicine at Duke University. She did a combined clinical and research fellowship in Palliative Care and General Internal Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh and received a Masters of Science in Clinical Research. During her fellowship she developed expertise in the study of health communication. She joined the faculty at UCSF in 2007.
In addition to her roles as ward attending, and attending on the Palliative Care consultation service, Dr. Anderson does research focused on outcomes of health communication. Her primary interest is in how clinicians’ responses to patients’ and relatives emotions’ impact their mental health. In fellowship, she did studies of cancer patients and relatives of patients in the intensive care unit. At UCSF, she will study communication between clinicians, patients, and relatives on the Hospitalist and Palliative Care Services. Dr. Anderson has also had in-depth training and experience in teaching communication skills to students, residents, and fellows.
