Research Experience |
| 7/1999-5/2000 |
Project investigating patient goals and satisfaction during primary care office visits.
Research Advisor: Dr. David Brody; MCP/Hahnemann Department of Medicine |
| 8/1995-7/1998 |
Staff research assistant - Level II
During this time we examined desensitization and resensitization of proteinase-activated receptor 2 (PAR-2); characterized antisera specific to protease activated receptor and localized the receptor in the rat gastrointestinal tract; isolated enteric neurons and examined signaling and desensitization of the NK1 tachykinin receptor in enteric neurons. My role was continued organization and performance of the experiments as before. In addition, I developed the technique used for isolation and cell culture of the guinea pig myenteric neurons.
Research Advisor: Dr. Nigel Burnett; UCSF Department of Surgery |
| 6/1993-8/1995 |
As a Staff research assistant - Level I
During this time, we delineated the pathway of internalization of substance P and the Neurokinin 1 receptor in rat kidney epithelial cells; characterized antisera specific to the NK1, NK2 and NK3 neurokinin receptors and localized these receptors in the rat gastrointestinal tract; isolated enteric neurons and delineated the pathway of internalization of substance P and the Neurokinin 1 receptor in neurons. My role was to organize and perform experiments, including cell and tissue histochemistry, tissue culture, and confocal microscopy.
Research Advisor: Dr. Nigel Burnett; UCSF Department of Surgery |
| 6/1992-6/1993 |
As a volunteer, I examined down-regulation of the enzyme dipeptidyl peptidase IV in the inflamed intestine of rats infected with the parasite Trichinella spirals. My role involved performing immunohistochemistry, western blots, and enzyme assays.
Research Advisor: Dr. Nigel Burnett; UCSF Department of Surgery |

Volunteer/Community Activities |
| 2000-2002 |
Toys for Tots - Volunteer - Co-coordinator
Program that insured every child attending one of our neighborhood grade schools, Mifflin Elementary, would receive a present at Christmas.
Philadelphia, PA |
| 2000-2002 |
Homeless Outreach Project - Volunteer - Pharmacy Coordinator
A student run medical clinic. Each week we would travel to a homeless shelter or street clinic site and provide medical care to those who could not afford insurance.
Philadelphia, PA |
| 1999-2000 |
Philadelphia’s Committee to End Homelessness - Outreach Volunteer
Outreach program walks the streets of Philadelphia, informing people of the many services offered at the homeless center. We would also bring warm drinks and supplies during the cold months.
Philadelphia, PA |
| 1997-1998 |
Project Read - Adult Literacy Tutor Volunteer in one-on-one tutorial program to enable functionally non-literate adults to improve their reading and writing skills.
San Francisco, CA |
| 1996-1998 |
Science by Mail - Museum of Science, Boston
Volunteer Scientist in a nationwide program which involved mail and email correspondence with grade school children. We "challenge packets" throughout the year containing information and materials related to an issue in science or technology. Then we would communicate through the mail, or email, about the topics.
