Dr. Sehgal divides his time between a clinical-educator role on the inpatient medical service, a clinical-investigator role with interests in patient safety and quality improvement, and a clinical-administrator role as Director of the Mt. Zion Hospital Medicine Service.
Dr. Sehgal's clinical responsibilities focus largely on the inpatient medical service at Moffitt-Long where he supervises and teaches internal medicine residents and students. He enjoys teaching evidence-based medicine, participates in quality and safety educational activities, and serves as a confidential faculty advisor for UCSF medical students.
Dr. Sehgal's academic interests involve a number of patient safety and quality improvement projects. He serves as an Associate Editor for WebM&M and Patient Safety Network (PSNet), two projects produced under contract from the Agency for Healthcare and Research Quality (AHRQ). AHRQ WebM&M was the first online journal dedicated to the case-based discussion of medical errors and patient safety. AHRQ PSNet is a one-stop web-based portal for patient safety resources that provides weekly updates on important research, conferences, toolkits, and news. Dr. Sehgal also sits on local patient safety committees and carries a strong interest in developing model units to test the most effective strategies to improve the quality and safety of care in hospitalized patients. He's particularly focused on working to improve the collaboration among physicians with nurses, pharmacists, administrators and others in designing patient safety interventions and innovative educational methods---such as multidisciplinary teamwork and communication training.
Dr. Sehgal received his medical degree from Rush Medical College in Chicago, completed a residency and chief residency in Internal Medicine at Stanford University, and then completed a fellowship at the Stanford Prevention Research Center studying prevention outcomes. During his fellowship, he earned a Masters in Public Health at the University of California at Berkeley.
