Hugo "Quinny" Cheng, M.D., joined the faculty at UCSF in 1996 after completing both medical school and residency training in Internal Medicine here. He is currently Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine and Director of the Medicine Consultation Service.
Dr. Cheng's primary clinical responsibility focuses on the Medicine Consultation Service. The MCS manages acute and chronic medical problems in patients hospitalized at UCSF on surgical, obstetrical, and psychiatric services. A key function of the service is to perform urgent preoperative medical evaluations and implement strategies that have been proven to prevent perioperative medical complications. Dr. Cheng also attends on the general medical wards and maintains a large primary care practice that serves a largely Chinese-American population.
Dr. Cheng's educational projects also center on perioperative
medicine. He has developed a curriculum for residents doing their
medicine consultation rotation and compiles and edits the MCS syllabus
used both at UCSF Medical Center and San Francisco General Hospital.
Dr. Cheng lectures frequently on perioperative medicine topics in
Continuing Medical Education programs. Along with Dr. Andrew
Auerbach, he organized a CME course, "Updates in Perioperative
Medicine". Dr. Cheng also chairs the Department of Medicine's annual
Internal Medicine Board Certification (and Recertification) Review CME
courses.
Several of Dr. Cheng's administrative roles involve promoting the safe and appropriate use of medications. He is chair of the medical center's Pharmacy & Therapeutics Committee and Medication Safety Subcommittee. He also serves as an inpatient utilization review and peer review consultant for Brown & Toland Medical Group, the physician services organization that represents UCSF providers to managed care organizations. He is currently a clinical representative to UCSF's Faculty Council.
