       Heather Nye, MD, PhD

Heather Nye, MD PhD is an Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine and Pediatrics. After receiving a degree in Chemistry at Duke, she completed her MD, PhD at Yale.  She then went on to train in the Harvard Combined Medicine-Pediatrics Residency Program (Brigham and Women's Hospital, Children's Hospital of Boston, Massachusetts General Hospital).  Following this training,  Dr. Nye came to UCSF in 2003 to practice both internal medicine and pediatrics as an academic Hospitalist.

Currently her clinical activities at UCSF include attending on both pediatric and adult medicine wards, as well as precepting students and residents in Pediatric Urgent Care.   Dr. Nye maintains a strong interest in modalities of bridging care from hospital to home.  She further enjoys many teaching activities through the medical school and has co-developed a transitional care curriculum with home visits for medical and pharmacy students on their inpatient medicine rotation.  This curriculum has now been extended to residents and students at all UCSF sites.  Another transitional care project which she helped develop is the Bridge Team—a physician/social work/nursing team that visits recently discharged geriatric UCSF patients with the aim of improving discharge safety and patient/PMD satisfaction.

Dr. Nye also spends considerable time in both departments and as the Med-Peds Advisor helps to mentor students interested in the combined residency program or those trying to decide on one field or the other.   She further has a keen interest in medical student education and in addition to giving various lectures, has taken an active role in helping to develop a new pilot integrated curriculum for medical students.
