The UCSF-Mt. Zion Hospitalist Service began caring for patients at UCSF Medical Center at Mt. Zion in July 2005 in response to demands for increased bed capacity at Moffitt-Long Hospital. The service has rapidly expanded and now provides care to a diverse group of 25-30 patients. Six Mt. Zion-based Hospitalists support all aspects of clinical care at Mt. Zion Hospital, including medical and palliative care consultation for surgical patients, active participation in the code blue team and leadership of the rapid response team.
Patients admitted to the Mt. Zion Medical Service encompass a variety of clinical conditions outlined below:
- Lower acuity admissions from the Emergency Department at Moffitt-Long
- Direct admissions from the UCSF ambulatory clinics; in particular, we’re in close proximity to the cancer center and care for patients with medical complications from their underlying cancer
- Patients from all services at UCSF Moffitt-Long who no longer require tertiary care but continue to require acute care services provided at Mt. Zion
- Patients with common diagnoses such as exacerbations of inflammatory bowel disease and sickle cell crisis
The Mt. Zion Medical service emphasizes an interdisciplinary and patient-centered approach to care. Hospitalists partner closely with nursing, social work, pharmacy and rehabilitation services to provide outstanding inpatient care and discharge planning. In addition to fostering teamwork, the unit-based nature of the service makes it an ideal place to pilot quality and IT initiatives.
While our clinical service is non-teaching, Mt. Zion hospitalists take advantage of educational opportunities in the School of Medicine serving as preceptors for first and second year students and teaching physical examination to students on their third year medicine clerkship. Mt. Zion hospitalists also spend 2-3 months per year as teaching attendings on the Medical Service at Moffitt-Long Hospital.
