       Hospital Medicine Clinician-Educator Fellowship

This is a one-year fellowship designed to provide internists with additional knowledge and skills to enhance their opportunities as an academic clinician-educator hospitalist. As such, it is appropriate for the recent graduate who wishes to hone his or her skills in clinical research, evidence-based medicine, quality improvement, and clinical teaching. Moreover, the year-long opportunity to be an integral member of the UCSF hospitalist group may help fellows who wish to help organize other academic hospitalist programs. Such individuals might be experienced faculty from other institutions or individuals wishing to "re-tool" as academic hospitalists. However, fellows who wish to become fully independent investigators in hospital medicine are encouraged to participate in our or another appropriate 2 year fellowship.

During the fellowship, fellows attend for approximately 5 months on the UCSF Medical Service and 1 month on the medical consultation service. In addition, they will improve their teaching through specific observation and feedback by several hospitalist faculty members. Fellows will have an opportunity to participate in the UCSF Training in Clinical Research Program TICR), and other structured educational experiences as appropriate to their interests. Although they will not be expected to complete major research projects, a goal of the fellowship is that fellows produce one publishable manuscript (a small study or clinical review) and/or complete one successful quality improvement or patient safety project.
