Medical Student Programs
UCSF Department of Medicine Student Programs office runs a wide variety of core and elective courses, as well as clerkships for UCSF and visiting Students at all four major participating hospital sites.

Additionally the office provides career counseling, mentoring and advising services for students interested in an Internal Medicine career.

Medical Student Program Courses

1st & 2nd year courses

  • IDS 102AB: Major Organs System — A 13 week course covering the cardiovascular, pulmonary & renal systems. Includes lectures, small groups, labs, and simulator sessions.
  • IDS 103: Metabolism & Nutrition — A 6-week course covering the GI system.
  • IDS 106: Epilogue — Preparatory course for Step 1 of Medical Boards for 2nd year medical students.

The Student Programs office also participates in the Foundations of Patient Care, Intersessions and offers a wide variety of electives including Narrative Medicine, Social Activism in Medicine, and Mentored End of Life Care.

3rd & 4th year courses

  • Medicine 110 — A core medicine clerkship offered at three diverse training sites which includes a standardized patient program. Each student is required to participate in this program around End of Life Care issues.
  • Med 140.01: Senior Medicine — a required course for 4th yr students.

Senior electives: A robust elective program with over 30 electives that include Emergency Medicine, Cardiology, Pulmonary Medicine, and other sub-specialties. The electives are offered at multiple sites for UCSF and visiting students.

CODA: the final course in the medical school curriculum for all students.

Career Advising

Medical students benefit from career advice offered by Medicine faculty. Dr. Karen Hauer & Dr. Cindy Lai meet regularly with students concerning career choices in Medicine and assist students as they go through the Residency Application Process for Internal Medicine and preliminary/transitional internships.
