SOM Encryption Project - Completing Your Inventory

In order to complete your inventory you will need to get some specific hardware information from your computers. Please follow the instructions for your computer platform. If your platform isn't listed here please contact Erik Wieland, DOM IT Director, at ewieland@medicine.ucsf.edu or 415-502-7822.

Instructions for: Mac OS X | Windows

Mac OS X

  1. Click on the Apple logo in the upper righthand corner of the screen and select About This Mac
  2. The operating system (OS) version is listed first. The Processor (CPU) is next and the Memory (RAM) is after that.
  3. Click the More Info... button. The serial number is listed here on the first screen.
  4. Click on Network in the list on the left. To get the wireless MAC address click on AirPort in the list of Active Services.
  5. To get the Ethernet MAC address click on Ethernet in the list of Active Services.
  6. Click on Software in the list on the left. The computer name is listed on this screen.

Windows

  1. Right-click on My Computer and select Properties
  2. The Operating System (OS) is listed first. We only need the type of Windows (in this example it's Windows XP Professional) and the Service Pack number. The processor (CPU) is listed under Computer: (in this example it's an Intel Core 2 Duo, and the speed is 2.4GHz). The memory (RAM) is just below this (we don't need the RAM speed).
  3. Click on the Computer Name tab in this window. If your computer is already bound to Active Directory the name will end in something like .campus.net.ucsf.edu. We only need the first part (in this case the computer name is dom-ewieland-vm).
  4. To get the MAC addresses first click on the Start menu and select Run..., and type in cmd and click OK or hit [Return].
  5. At the command prompt type getmac and hit [Return]. All of your network interface MAC addresses will be listed. Ethernet will be listed first and wireless second (both will start with 00-). Note: if you get an error when you run the getmac command please follow the instructions for finding your physical address here.
  6. Each brand of Windows computer puts the serial number in a different location. If you use a Dell (which we strongly recommend) the serial number is actually called a Service Tag instead. Here are some examples of what a service tag looks like on the bottom of two different models of Dell laptops.

  7. To get the hard drive size double-click on the My Computer icon on the desktop. If you don't see a My Computer icon on the desktop then double-click on the My Documents icon on the desktop and then click the Up icon in the toolbar , then double-click on the My Computer icon.
  8. Right-click on the Local Disk (C:) icon and select Properties. The hard drive size, or capacity, is listed here.
