Makarere University-UCSF Research Collaboration

A collaborative project between Makerere University and the University of California, San Francisco was established in 1998 by Dr. Moses Kamya and Dr. Philip Rosenthal. The primary focus of the MU-UCSF Malaria Research Collaboration has been the evaluation of antimalarial treatment. Since 1998, six clinical trials of antimalarial drug efficacy have been completed in Kampala, and three large cohort studies are currently ongoing to evaluate the efficacy and safety of different antimalarial combinations, home-based management of fever, and the interaction between HIV and malaria. The infrastructure of MU-UCSF has expanded to include a malaria study clinic in the outpatient department of Mulago Hospital, administration / data center office space, and a laboratory dedicated to microscopy, molecular studies of malaria, and culture of malaria parasites. In addition, our project has been active in training and capacity building, with a goal of creating a sustainable network of research activities in Uganda.

Medical Effectiveness Research Center for Diverse Populations

The Medical Effectiveness Research Center for Diverse Populations (MERC) was established within the UCSF School of Medicine in 1993. MERC unites investigators from multiple disciplines, departments and schools in conducting clinical and outcomes research on health services, specific medical conditions, and prevention that addresses racial and ethnic disparities in health and health care. MERC is committed to promoting the development of minority investigators and supports training and mentoring of students, residents, fellows and junior faculty. MERC has built a network of relationships with diverse community-based organizations and strives to incorporate the community perspective in training and research.

Molecular Medicine Training Program

The Molecular Medicine Training Program (MMTP) offers post-residency research training positions for physicians in the fields of Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, Dermatology, Laboratory Medicine and Pathology, who are committed to a career in basic or translational biomedical research. Our goal is to provide advanced training in the experimental study of the molecular and cellular basis of disease. This is done through individual laboratory research, lectures, seminars and journal clubs. In addition, through an individual advisory/mentoring system, the program provides guidance and advice about the practicalities of pursuing a career at the interface of science and medicine.

Multidisciplinary Clinical Research Center

The broad aim of the UCSF Multidisciplinary Clinical Research Center Program (UCSF MCRC) is to improve outcomes for persons with various forms of rheumatic diseases by discovery of the medical, demographic, and contextual factors affecting those outcomes. This overarching aim is pursued by a comprehensive program of clinical research in the rheumatic diseases, including but not limited to that within the MCRC; by serving as a catalyst for such clinical research throughout UCSF; and by systematic training of clinical investigators in the rheumatic diseases.
